Job Title: Direct Support Specialist

Job Description: DSPs support individuals where they live by: Helping them live as independently as possible. Helping ensure they are healthy and safe. Helping with daily life activities like cooking, cleaning, dressing, bathing, shopping, transportation and community activities.

Essential Requirements:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Education: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is often required, as DSPs may be responsible for transporting clients.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification: Many employers require or provide training in CPR and First Aid.
  • Background Check: A clean criminal background check is essential

Skills and Qualities:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication, empathy, and patience are crucial for interacting with individuals with disabilities.
  • Physical Stamina: DSPs need to be able to move and stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to manage stressful situations and make sound judgments.
  • Organizational Skills: DSPs need to be able to track and record information, and organize client schedules and activities.
  • Computer Literacy: Basic computer skills are often needed for administrative tasks.
  • Reliable Transportation: Many positions require reliable transportation to and from work and to transport clients.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours: Many positions require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Notes:

  • Experience:

While not always mandatory, experience working with individuals with  disabilities or in a care setting can be beneficial.

  • Training:

  • Job Duties:

DSPs assist individuals with disabilities in various daily living activities, including personal care, meal preparation, transportation, and community involvement.
